Characteristics Of Challenges In Multi Project Environment Of A Construction Company
Vrushank Shah and Jyoti Trivedi
Construction company everywhere faces problems, uncertainties and challenges, especially in multi project environment. The driving force of construction management and single project management issues are undeniably dependent on challenges of multi project environment in any large scale construction company. These challenges are prerequisite for various important strategies. Such prolific strategies are vital and are needed to expand opportunities and capacity for sustainable growth. Characteristics of challenges lead to finding dynamic decisions for managing and improving such strategies in multi project as well as corporate management. The present research paper explores characteristics and effectiveness of twelve foremost challenges, which are severally found in multi project environment of any large-scale construction company, containing multiple construction projects in different regions with dissimilar circumstances. Standing positions of these challenges are also compared with each other in the paper. The analysis approach entails Kruskal Wallis statistical analysis, appraised by experienced multi project and corporate managers of the large-scale construction companies of India.

Incidence Of Material Waste In Indian Building Industry
Ramaswamy, K. P.
Material waste is recognised as one of the major waste types in the construction industry. Currently, the documentation available in literature on this issue in the Indian construction industry context is very less. This paper aims to investigate the material waste in the Indian construction industry, focusing mainly on building projects. Six ongoing projects in southern India were taken up for the study and the waste identified was quantified in terms of cost. Data regarding material waste was obtained from the reconciliation data and other documents maintained by planning engineers at the site. The results showed that the material waste as percentage of material cost for the selected items that were studied varied from 2.6% to 7.9%. The results also indicate that there is a large amount of variability in the wastage among the projects studied. Most of this waste can be avoided by implementing suitable preventive measures and by following lean construction practices, thereby improving the performance.

Immobilization of Hazardous Cr(VI) In Blended Cement: XRD And Leaching Studies
Neeraj Jain
Marble dust from gang saw industries is generated as waste in million tonnes and is an environmental hazard due to disposal problems. The marble dust is a filler material having similar properties like limestone and takes part in early hydration reactions due to the presence of high amount of calcium carbonate. In the present study, 40 % of marble dust (CM) blended with Portland cement (C0) has been utilized to immobilize (solidify) hazardous Cr (VI) (1000-3000 mg/l) and the effect on parameters like setting time, compressive strength and leachability of Cr (VI) has been investigated as a function of curing time. It is observed that the initial and final setting times of these cements increase with increase in Cr (VI) concentration. The effect of Cr (VI) addition on the physical, chemical and engineering properties of solidified samples (C0 and CM with Cr (VI)) were studied and the results revealed that the compressive strength reduced with addition of Cr (VI). The samples of C0 and CM containing Cr (VI) were also tested for leachability of Cr (VI) in acidic solution (pH=~3) using Toxicity Characteristics Leaching procedure (TCLP) tests. The leached Cr (VI) concentration was under the allowable limit (5 mg/l) of U.S. EPA at lower initial concentration. The hydration chemistry of the solidified samples has been studied by XRD which shows the formation of various phases like ettringite, Cr-ettringite, tobermorite, monocarboaluminate etc. The morphology of the hydration products was studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) which also supports the formation of various hydrations phases as observed during XRD in the solidified Cementitious binders.
Supreme Court Judgment In BALCO Case And International Commercial Arbitration
Vasundhara Patil
This paper tries to analyse the judicial trends in interpreting the provisions of Indian Arbitration act 1996 in relation to the enforcement of foreign awards passed in seat of Arbitration situated outside India .Though the Indian Arbitration and Conciliation Act 1996 by and large has adopted the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) model law and the New York conventions and Geneva Convention , the decisions given in Bhatia international bulk Trading SA were not according to the objects of UNCITRAL model laws. As such, the foreign investors or the contracting parties felt that due to such judgment, the intervention of Indian Courts would be more which meant long drawn out court battles leading to increase in costs and uncertainty. However, on 6th September 2012, in the case of Bharat Aluminium Co. v. Kaiser Aluminium Technical Service, Inc. which dealt with arbitration law, Supreme Court has given a land mark judgment changing stance from its earlier judgments and giving new dimension to the interpretation of international arbitration contract clauses and enforcement of foreign awards in India. The Court has held that where the seat of Arbitration is outside India the Indian courts cannot set aside the award. After ten years, the Supreme Court has interpreted the enforcement of foreign awards in terms of UNCITRAL objects. This BALCO judgment has rewritten history. It will prove to be a boost to international arbitration i.e. parties to the international commercial contract can now be certain of getting justice as they expected from Indian courts in respect of enforcement of foreign awards.
